There’s a conversation happening in the Witchy Healer Wisdom School centered around the backlash that can happen after a time of increased goodness.
For instance, perhaps you experience a much better day than usual – more connection, more joy and ease, more of a sense of aliveness, less physical pain even perhaps.
And then, the next day, you find yourself in a state of fear, panic, anxiety… just waiting for the ‘other shoe to drop’. Waiting for something ‘bad’ to happen to counter the feelings of goodness… expecting to be punished in some way for having experienced more goodness than usual.
This fear, when it arises, can be incredibly intense, compelling, and all-consuming.
Have you experienced something of this nature?
If so, kindness for that. And, here are some suggestions for how to work with experiences like this.
- Take note of the intensity of the experience. In instances like this, when the intensity is so dialed up, this in and of itself is an indication that what you are experiencing likely isn’t just yours.
Take a moment and ask your well ancestors and guides to clear any/all of this fear that isn’t yours (that is theirs, that is from the collective) from your body and the space surrounding you.
It is likely just making this request will give you a little space, that the intensity will lessen, at least a little (and perhaps a lot).
From there, anything else you attempt to help settle your nervous system is likely to be more effective.
- Use the skills you have cultivated over the past many years… requesting healing/holding from your guides as you seek to metabolize whatever fear remains in your body, shaking, crying, journaling, time in nature, talking it out with a trusted friend, physical activity…..
And also…
- Keep in mind what I mentioned earlier this month about expanding our capacity to receive goodness and how anything that is ‘too much, too soon, too fast’ (including goodness) can be perceived by our nervous systems as a threat.
In situations like this, where having an experience of increased goodness elicits a backlash of fear and panic, the amount of goodness you received was more than your body/nervous system could tolerate (without feeling ‘threatened’).
That’s ok. That happens.
When things like this happen, it is an opportunity to more fully anchor that goodness into our lives through consciously allowing, working with, meeting, and asking for help and support with all the fear that naturally arises in response.
Expansion and contraction:
You can think of the experiencing of increased goodness as an expansion… now, the fear is here in response (in contraction).
We tend to think of expansion as good and contraction as bad.
What if, instead, we view the contraction as 1) just the normal exhale following an inhale and 2) an opportunity to ANCHOR the more expanded state more fully into our bodies/lives.
Because, the more you are able to meet the fear (with the help of your guides and using all the skills you’ve cultivated over the past decades), the more you will be able to experience times of increased goodness without the backlash.

ps. I’m starting to see some signs up spring here in northern Idaho! As much as I’ve loved the winter and all the snow (yay!), I’m not so much enjoying this time in between winter and spring. The dreary skies, the now-dirty (almost gone) snow, and the continued lack of green and newness.
And yet! Spring is coming! There is a renewed sense of aliveness on the air and we do have some flower shoots pushing their way up toward the sky!
